I completed my Speciality training in Nephrology at a 450 bedded tertiary apex care teaching hospital meant for kidney diseases, attached to 3500 bedded civil hospital in Ahmedabad with 24 hour emergency services including
Ultrasound, CT Scan, MRI Scan, equipped blood bank, state of the art Critical Care Unit and multiple training programmes catering to undergraduate, postgraduate and super speciality courses. During this period I gained a lot of experience, helped by the sheer numbers of patients, in managing Nephrology outpatients including, General Nephrology, Transplantation & Paediatric Nephrology.

 


The Nephrology Department at Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre & Dr.H.L.Trivedi Institute for Transplantation Sciences, Civil Hospital is a very busy unit with more than 2000 patients visiting the Nephrology Outpatient Department every month. The department has facilities for indoor admissions with a well equipped dialysis units, intensive care unit and operation theatre. On an average approximately 1000 dialysis are carried out each month and around 200 transplantations are carried out in the department annually which includes cadaver and paediatric transplantations.

 


*    During my residency my duties included attending to outpatients and indoor patients and performing procedures like haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, catheter insertion, first under supervision and then independently.
•    I have done more than 600 femoral catheter insertion and 300 jugular catheter insertions and 300 native kidney biopsies and 150 graft biopsies etc during my residency.
•    During my residency and as Assistant professor, I had the unique opportunity of working as a team member in more than 60 Cadaver renal transplantations that included both intercity and intra-city transplantations.
•    I was involved in various research projects undergoing at Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Cen1.    Comparative assessment of efficacy & safety of recombinant human crythrepoictic alpha in patients with anaemia of CRF.
2.    Abetimus Sodium in SLE patients with history of renal disease.
3.    Belatacept Evaluation of Nephroprotection and Efficacy as First Line Immunosuppression.
Postgraduate training at B. J. Medial College, Bapunagar General Hospital & Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, India


My duties as a post graduate resident included:


•    Management of medical emergencies including Accident & Emergency.
•    Evaluation of patients in outpatient department.
•    First on call for intensive care unit.
•    Organizing investigations for in patients and
planning discharges and follow-up of in-patients.
•    Underwent rotation programme in the second year of residency at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad. Attended 2 months of postings in Casualty managing Accident and Emergency cases, Neurology, Oncology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology and in Nephrology.


Compulsory Rotating Internship
This was a three monthly posting after the final year of medical schooling (M.B.B.S.) from the J.J.M Medical College, an 1000 bedded multi super specialty hospital affiliated to the University of Kuvempu university, India, during which I was posted in the departments of Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Social and Preventive Medicine to learn the basic clinical necessities for the award of the medical degree.
