Frequently Asked Questions

A bone marrow transplant could be an effective treatment option for certain types of blood cancer. However, whether it can lead to a cure depends on multiple factors, including the type of blood cancer, the stage of the disease, the overall health condition of the patient, and the response to the treatment.

Potential bone marrow donors can be family members, especially siblings, or unrelated individuals who are a match for your tissue type. HLA typing is performed to determine whether the donor is compatible. HLA type matching is extremely important for the success of your BMT treatment.

If you are not able to find a compatible donor within the family, you may look for one through bone marrow donor registries. Many patients undergoing BMT treatment find their donors through registries and go on to have successful treatment.

A bone marrow donation does not involve any health risks and is generally safe for the donor. The process of peripheral blood stem cell donation involves a non-surgical procedure, like donating blood. In the case of marrow donation from the hip bone, the donor may experience some temporary discomfort; however, they will recover soon after the procedure.

The doctors will closely monitor the patient after the procedure. Possible side effects of the BMT procedure include fatigue, infection risk, and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Regular follow-up visits after the treatment are important to manage these side effects. The severity of side effects may vary from one patient to another.

The risk of relapse after BMT treatment depends on a myriad of factors, such as the type of blood disease, its stage, the type of BMT, the treatment response, and the overall health of the patient. During your treatment, our specialists take all necessary measures to reduce the risk of relapse and help you recover better.
