Nuclear Medicine
A PET-CT scan is a powerful imaging technique used to visualize the body's metabolic processes and anatomical features. It combines PET and CT scans to provide detailed images that help diagnose and stage various conditions, including cancer. You may need a PET-CT scan to accurately assess the extent of the disease, detect cancer, monitor treatment response, or plan further medical interventions.
During a PET-CT scan, a small amount of radioactive tracer is injected into the body. This tracer emits positrons, which interact with surrounding tissue and emit gamma rays. The PET scanner detects these rays, mapping areas of high metabolic activity. The CT scan provides anatomical context. By overlaying both scans, a comprehensive image is created, revealing abnormalities or areas of concern, which appear as bright spots.
PET-CT scans involve minimal risks. The radioactive tracer used has a short half-life and poses a low radiation dose. Allergic reactions are rare. Before the procedure, your healthcare team will ensure that the benefits of this procedure outweigh any potential risks, ensuring your safety throughout the procedure.
Preparations may include fasting before the scan, avoiding strenuous exercise, and abstaining from caffeine. You'll receive specific instructions from your healthcare provider. It is better to inform them about medications, allergies, and medical history to ensure a smooth procedure.
Initially, you will be given the radioactive tracer intravenously. After a brief waiting period, you'll be asked to lie down on a scanning table that moves through the PET and CT scanners. The process is painless; however, you'll be asked to remain still for accurate imaging.
Following the scan, you can resume normal activities, including driving and eating. Drink plenty of fluids to flush out the tracer. Your healthcare team will discuss any post-scan instructions or concerns.
PET-CT scan results provide detailed images showing areas of abnormal metabolic activity. These images help your healthcare team assess the presence, location, and extent of diseases, guiding treatment decisions.
A positive result indicates areas of increased metabolic activity, suggesting the presence of disease. Your doctor may recommend further tests, such as biopsies, to confirm the diagnosis and plan appropriate treatment.
