Here we are with another inspiring story of a cancer survivor from Ahmedabad.
In this story, we will be exploring Shailesh Mehta’s encounter with oral cancer and how he eventually conquered it.
This cancer survivor story also discusses tobacco consumption as a major risk factor for oral cancer and why it is essential to refrain from such habits.
A few years before his encounter with oral cancer, Shailesh picked up a habit that seemed harmless at first—chewing pan masala, a form of flavored tobacco. It was a common sight in his social circle, and it didn’t appear dangerous.
As months went on, the once-in-a-while consumption gave way to a full-blown addiction. Little did Shailesh know that chewing tobacco (pan masala) was slowly paving the way for his encounter with oral cancer.
By 2018, Shailesh started experiencing oral cancer symptoms. However, he did not realize that.
He went to see a local doctor who performed a detailed evaluation and told him he had oral cancer.
This diagnosis stunned his whole family. So began a race against time to find the best possible treatment and care. The doctors recommended he undergo immediate treatment.
Realizing the seriousness of the condition, Shailesh went to HCG Aastha Cancer Centre, a leading cancer hospital in Ahmedabad known for state-of-the-art oncology care and experienced specialists.
Upon meeting the expert team here, he gained confidence in his decision. The expert team at HCG had a detailed discussion with them, thoroughly studied his case, and recommended a personalized oral cancer treatment plan for him, which would help manage his condition in the best possible way.
At HCG, Shailesh met Dr. Kaustubh Patel, an eminent head and neck surgical oncologist, who offered his specialized expertise for effective disease management.
After a detailed evaluation and staging, the medical team determined that surgery for oral cancer was the best option to cure the tumor.
The surgery was performed successfully by Dr. Kaustubh Patel's team, focusing on both the complete removal of the cancer and preserving the functionality of Shailesh's jaw and mouth.
The journey was not easy; however, the compassionate care and support he received at HCG made all the difference.
In the year 2025, Shailesh Mehta is fit and well, with no trace of any cancer.
He is immensely thankful to Dr. Kaustubh Patel and the rest of the HCG team for making his mouth cancer experience a seamless one. They helped him have a second chance at life with timely and appropriate medical interventions for his condition.
After shaping his life, Shailesh has a special message for the present generation of youth.
“I want to tell every young person out there—do not consume tobacco. Not pan masala, not gutka, not cigarettes. It's a trap. One small habit can ruin your entire life," he urges.
He continues, “Please, think about your family, your dreams, and your future. Don’t wait for a diagnosis to change your lifestyle. Quit now.”
HCG concurs with Shailesh: with appropriate oral cancer prevention measures, it is possible to reduce the risk of oral cancer significantly.
As he reflects on his journey, Shailesh is filled with gratitude for the people who stood by him.
"I thank the entire HCG team," says the doctor. "From the front desk staff to nurses, technicians, and doctors—everyone treated me with care and kindness.” The HCG team did not just treat him; it gave him hope.
Shailesh Mehta's life today is not only a survival saga but also an encouraging and very powerful reminder of the importance of awareness, prompt action, and correct medical guidance.
Tobacco use significantly contributed to Shailesh's oral cancer diagnosis. However, thanks to timely medical intervention, he was able to achieve positive health outcomes. Cancer medicine has progressed remarkably in recent years, allowing doctors to manage oral cancer cases effectively, regardless of the stage, risk factors, and individual circumstances.
Key takeaways from Shailesh's experience highlight the importance of avoiding harmful habits such as tobacco use, seeking attention for persistent symptoms, and following post-treatment guidelines closely.
Soon, we will be back with more such inspiring cancer patient stories. Until then, stay tuned.
