A CRP blood test measures C-reactive protein, an acute-phase protein that the liver releases into the bloodstream when inflammation builds up somewhere in the body. Inflammation may result from infection, injury, autoimmune disease, or other medical conditions, or, less often, something like cancer. By itself, the reading alone can't tell you whether cancer is involved. When interpreted alongside other clinical findings, CRP levels may help guide further evaluation and monitoring.

A CRP blood test is a routine blood test that measures the level of C-reactive protein in your blood. A CRP test does not detect cancer directly. It does not measure cancer cells, but rather inflammation in the body. When high CRP levels are accompanied by other symptoms or abnormal test findings, this can sometimes be suspicious, but the test alone cannot diagnose cancer.
CRP is more often used as an inflammatory and prognostic marker to help doctors monitor disease progression or treatment response in certain situations. In some cancer patients, chronic inflammation may be associated with higher CRP levels, but many non-cancerous conditions can also increase CRP. Yes, chemotherapy damages cells, and the body's immune response kicks in as it processes dead tissue. CRP rises temporarily during this process. A short spike is expected and isn't cause for alarm, but a sustained climb warrants further evaluation by your oncology team.
CRP is one part of a broader set of oncology blood tests. No single blood test can confirm cancer on its own, but several tests together paint a much clearer picture. First, a complete blood count (CBC) checks for abnormalities in blood cells that could indicate leukemia or other blood-related cancers.
Second, specific tumor markers such as PSA, CA-125, or CEA flag organ-specific concerns and help guide further testing. Third, a CRP test or hs-CRP adds the inflammation layer that helps doctors see the bigger picture. Can cancer cause high CRP levels?
